How to use BGCSE Chemistry past papers

The Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) is the national qualification taken at the end of senior secondary school in Botswana.

Chemistry rewards accurate terminology and careful working. Past papers show which topics come back often and how examiners expect equations, definitions and calculations to be written.

Look for questions on atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, reactions and equations, acids and bases, and calculations with moles or quantities.

At senior secondary level, papers reward clear and well-organised answers. Plan your revision across the whole syllabus, and use full past papers under timed conditions as your exams get closer.

Study tips

  • Practise writing and balancing equations until you can do it without looking.
  • Learn definitions precisely, because small wording changes can change the meaning.
  • Show every step in calculations and include units.
  • Make a one-page summary for each topic and test yourself from it.
  • Use the marking scheme to see which key words earn marks.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Unbalanced equations or missing state symbols when they are asked for.
  • Confusing similar terms, for example atoms, ions and molecules.
  • Skipping the working in calculation questions.

This is general study guidance and not an official syllabus. Always check your current syllabus and exam requirements with your school or the examination board.
