BGCSE Physics

How to use BGCSE Physics past papers

The Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) is the national qualification taken at the end of senior secondary school in Botswana.

Physics combines knowing the ideas with applying formulas correctly. Past papers help you practise choosing the right formula, rearranging it and giving an answer with the correct unit.

Look for questions on motion, forces, energy, electricity, waves and heat, and for calculations that use formulas.

At senior secondary level, papers reward clear and well-organised answers. Plan your revision across the whole syllabus, and use full past papers under timed conditions as your exams get closer.

Study tips

• Write down the formula, substitute the values, then give the answer with units. Do this every time.
• Keep a formula sheet of your own and practise rearranging each formula.
• Draw a diagram for every problem, even a rough one.
• Check that your answer is sensible, for example a speed that is far too large probably has a mistake.
• Redo questions you got wrong after a few days without looking at the answer.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Mixing units, such as using centimetres and metres in one calculation.
• Using the wrong formula because the question was read too quickly.
• Giving a numerical answer with no unit.

This is general study guidance and not an official syllabus. Always check your current syllabus and exam requirements with your school or the examination board.
