BGCSE Setswana

How to use BGCSE Setswana past papers

The Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) is the national qualification taken at the end of senior secondary school in Botswana.

Language papers test reading, writing and correct use of the language. Past papers help you become comfortable with the types of questions, the vocabulary used, and the way answers should be written.

Look for comprehension passages, writing tasks, and questions on grammar, vocabulary and spelling.

At senior secondary level, papers reward clear and well-organised answers. Plan your revision across the whole syllabus, and use full past papers under timed conditions as your exams get closer.

Study tips

• Read each passage carefully and go back to the text to check your answers.
• Practise writing short pieces regularly, then ask a teacher or a fluent speaker to read them.
• Keep a list of new words and idioms and use them in your own sentences.
• Check spelling and punctuation at the end of every piece of writing.
• Read books, newspapers and other material in the language to widen your vocabulary.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Answering from memory instead of checking the passage.
• Leaving out the final proofreading check.
• Not following the format that the writing task asks for.

This is general study guidance and not an official syllabus. Always check your current syllabus and exam requirements with your school or the examination board.
