How to use PSLE English past papers
The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is the national examination taken at the end of primary school in Botswana.
English papers test reading, writing and your control of language. Past papers show the kinds of passages, writing tasks and language questions that appear, and how to manage your time between them.
Look for reading passages with questions, writing tasks such as letters, reports, stories or essays, and grammar, vocabulary and punctuation questions.
At primary level, short and regular practice works better than long sessions. Work through one paper section at a time, ideally with a parent, guardian or teacher who can help you understand the questions you miss.
Study tips
- Read each passage through twice before you start answering, then go back to the text to find evidence.
- Spend a few minutes planning each piece of writing so that it has a clear beginning, middle and end.
- Check that your writing matches the type of text requested, such as a letter, a report or a story.
- Leave time to proofread for spelling, punctuation and sentence endings.
- Read widely outside your textbooks. It improves vocabulary and the flow of your writing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying lines from the passage when the question asks you to use your own words.
- Writing in the wrong format for the task.
- Running out of time before the writing section.
This is general study guidance and not an official syllabus. Always check your current syllabus and exam requirements with your school or the examination board.
