How to use PSLE Mathematics past papers
The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is the national examination taken at the end of primary school in Botswana.
Mathematics tests whether you can choose a suitable method and carry it out accurately within the time. Past papers show which topics are asked often, how questions are worded and where marks are given for working.
Look for questions on number work, algebra, shape and measurement, and data handling, and for multi-step problems that need several skills together.
At primary level, short and regular practice works better than long sessions. Work through one paper section at a time, ideally with a parent, guardian or teacher who can help you understand the questions you miss.
Study tips
- Show your working in every question. Marks are often given for method even when the final answer is wrong.
- Learn the formulas and rules you are expected to know, and practise using them rather than only reading them.
- Time yourself on a few questions at a time, then on a whole paper, to build speed.
- When you mark your work, note whether each mistake was a method error, an arithmetic slip or a misread question.
- Redo the questions you missed a few days later, without looking at the solution.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Skipping working, so no method marks can be given.
- Ignoring instructions about rounding or units.
- Spending too long on one hard question and leaving easier ones unanswered.
This is general study guidance and not an official syllabus. Always check your current syllabus and exam requirements with your school or the examination board.
