How to use PSLE Science past papers

The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is the national examination taken at the end of primary school in Botswana.

Science papers test whether you understand ideas and can use them in new situations. Past papers show the style of question, the diagrams and data you are likely to meet, and how much detail answers need.

Look for questions on living things, materials, energy and forces, the environment, and for diagram, table and experiment questions.

At primary level, short and regular practice works better than long sessions. Work through one paper section at a time, ideally with a parent, guardian or teacher who can help you understand the questions you miss.

Study tips

• Learn key words and definitions, then practise using them in your own sentences.
• Practise reading diagrams, tables and simple graphs carefully before answering.
• For experiment questions, think about what is being changed, what is being measured and what is kept the same.
• Link ideas to everyday examples. They are easier to remember and often useful in answers.
• After each paper, list the topics where you lost marks and revise those first.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Writing a very short answer where a reason or explanation is asked for.
• Leaving out units in measurement questions.
• Not reading the diagram or table before answering.
